Le Centre culturel canadien présente les trois dernières vidéos (des vingt-cinq réalisées depuis 1995) de Donigan Cumming, en versions originales sous-titrées en français.
Le travail de Donigan Cumming aborde les thèmes du corps, de la vérité et de la fiction, des tabous de la représentation ainsi que celui de l’engagement social. L’œuvre de Cumming dérange. Elle confronte depuis des années le spectateur à une galerie de personnages marginaux, excentriques et volubiles dont la vie se développe au fil de photographies, films et tableaux documentant et, en même temps, mettant en scène une intimité paradoxalement attachante et obscène.
En plus des nombreuses expositions qui lui ont été consacrées en Amérique et en Europe, parmi lesquelles la déterminante Pretty Ribbons en 1994 aux Rencontres Internationales de la photographie à Arles, Donigan Cumming a fait l’objet de rétrospectives dont celles organisées en 2002 par le Pacific Film Archive (Berkeley) et Visions du Réel (Suisse). L’artiste était cette année finaliste du prestigieux Scotiabank Photography Award.
« Le fil conducteur de ce programme est la vie des objets. Dans Too many Things, nous sommes plongés dans un monde de choses, jadis désirées, aujourd’hui jetées. Dans Exit Interview, la pulsion documentaire – de tout conserver – est violemment rejetée. Le documentariste est viré par les personnages qu’il a créés. Enfin, dans Out of Kerr’s Suitcase, nous voyons où finissent toutes les images : dans une valise qu’on ouvre comme un tombeau égyptien. Le grand prêtre de cette cérémonie est Rawson (Ross) Hill, qui figure dans les trois œuvres – une personne que je connais et photographie depuis 1982 » (Donigan Cumming).
La projection sera suivie d’un échange avec l’artiste mené par l’historien du cinéma et critique Jean Perret.

In the presence of the director and artist Donigan Cumming together with Jean Perret, Director of the Cinéma du Réel department at the HEAD School of Art and Design, Geneva.
The Centre Culturel Canadien presents Donigan Cumming’s three latest video works (among the 25 he has shot since 1995) in original versions subtitled in French.
Donigan Cumming’s work broaches subjects such as the body, truth and fiction, the taboos of representation, as well as social commitment. His is a disturbing body of work. For years, it has confronted its viewers with marginal, eccentric and voluble people whose lives unfold through photographs, films and paintings which document while also staging an intimacy in the form of a paradox, at once endearing and obscene.
Besides numerous exhibitions of his works in America and Europe—among which the memorable 1994 Pretty Ribbons at the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival, Donigan Cumming has had retrospectives organised by the Pacific Film Archive (Berkeley, USA) and Visions du Réel documentary film festival (Switzerland). This year, the artist was a finalist for the prestigious Scotiabank Photography Award.
“The connecting tissue of this program is the life of objects. In Too Many Things we are plunged into a world of things, once desired, now discarded. In Exit Interview, the documentary impulse – to preserve everything – is violently rejected. The documentarian is fired by the characters he created. Finally, in Out of Kerr’s Suitcase, we see where all the images end up – in a suitcase that is unpacked like an Egyptian tomb. The high priest of this ceremony is Rawson (Ross) Hill, who figures in all three works – a person I have known and photographed since 1982 » (Donigan Cumming).
The screening will be followed by a discussion with the artist conducted by film historian and critic Jean Perret.
